60 people trapped, missing in building collapse in China

A six-story building collapsed in Changsa city in China’s Hunan province, more than 60 people were trapped and missing.

Mayor Zheng Jianxin said on Saturday at a news conference that five of the 23 people had been rescued from the building and were in hospital, but in a stable condition. The Changsa mayor said 39 others remained uncontactable following the accident at noon local time on Friday.

Authorities are still continuing to assess the situation to better determine the status of those still missing. Chinese President Xi Jinping gave instructions to rescue people stuck in the building “at all costs” and ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse. China’s State Councilor Wang Yong was also tasked with leading the team to inspect and direct the search and rescue work.
