77th session of UN General Assembly opens

– The 77th session of the UN General Assembly was opened on Tuesday in New York by new General Assembly President Csaba Korosi.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his opening remarks, called for solidarity among member states in addressing shared challenges: conflicts, climate change, a broken global financial system that is affecting developing countries, poverty, inequality, hunger, divisions, and mistrust.

President Korosi said the only way to achieve better outcomes is to change, following the roadmaps of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for disaster risk reduction, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and Our Common Agenda proposed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. These guidelines indicate the right direction. What remains to be seen is whether or not the world can follow them.

Korosi underlined the responsibility and role of the UN General Assembly in finding answers to the issues. He reiterated the motto for his tenure as president: ‘Solutions Through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science.

Beginning next Tuesday, heads of state and top diplomats from around the world will gather for a week-long summit.
