Al Assad: Syrian constitutional reform depends on the people’s will
Any constitutional reform in Syria will only be carried out when it is supported by the Syrian people, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday.
In an interview with Russia's NTV television channel, Assad said that if there is a referendum and people support a new constitution, the government will accept it. He said that constitutional reform has nothing to do with the president or the government of Syria, nor does it have anything to do with foreign countries or international organizations.
Assad also slammed chemical weapons accusations by the West as a pretext for foreign intervention, insisting that Syria has not possessed chemical weapons since 2013.
