APEC dialogue on sustainable tourism opens

The APEC dialogue on sustainable tourism was officially launched on June 19 in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh province.

The event drew the attendance of 150 delegates from 21 APEC economies, scholars from the World Tourism Organization, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien said that the dialogue is an initiative of Viet Nam to realize the APEC Strategy for Strengthening Quality Growth and contribute to the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development set by the United Nations.

The event offers a good chance for APEC member economies to define reality and figure out practical actions and measures to promote sustainable tourism development and implement the UN's 17 sustainable tourism goals.

Managing Director of the APEC Secretariat Alan Bollard praised the Vietnamese initiative. Dr. Alan Bollard stated that SMEs play an important role in sustainable tourism development. Economies should focus on local advantages and environmental protection.

The organization of the APEC dialogue on sustainable tourism would contribute to asserting Viet Nam's role and position in the region in policy making on the field.

Representatives will discuss and share experience to promote the sustainable tourism development policy in the Asia-Pacific region. The event also consists of a dialogue with APEC business community on sustainable tourism development.

APEC tourism leaders were scheduled to adopt a declaration on sustainable tourism development including specific recommendations and orientations on sustainable tourism development in APEC./.
