ASEAN countries persistent in building drug-free community

ASEAN member countries have re-affirmed their stance against legalizing drug use except for medical and scientific purposes, according to Colonel Hoang Anh Tuyen, deputy head of the Office of Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security.

Colonel Tuyen said during the sixth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD-6) in Hanoi on Thursday, delegates approved an ASEAN Declaration opposing the legalization of controlled narcotic substances apart from medical and scientific purposes and calling on the international community to abide by the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which is considered the foundation of the global drug control system. Colonel Tuyen said that documents approved at AMMD-6 will guide all future regional drug control activities and drug enforcement cooperation.
