ASEAN Foreign Ministers to discuss Myanmar on Thursday

-Southeast Asian foreign ministers will meet in Indonesia on Thursday to discuss Myanmar, according to an official from Cambodia, the rotating ASEAN Chair for 2022. Chum Sounry, spokesman for Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the meeting will focus on the status of ASEAN’s five-point consensus agreed with Myanmar’s military leaders last year, and will, on that basis, decide what ASEAN’s approach and next steps should be.

At a summit in Jakarta in April 2021, the nine ASEAN leaders and the Myanmar military chief agreed to five points: “immediate cessation of violence” with all parties exercising “utmost restraint”; a constructive dialogue among all parties; the mediation of such talks by a special envoy of the ASEAN chair; provisions of humanitarian assistance coordinated by ASEAN; and a visit to Myanmar by an ASEAN delegation, headed by the special envoy, to meet with all parties.
