Australia, Japan deeply concerned over South China Sea

– Japan and Australia on Wednesday voiced their strong opposition to unilateral actions to change the status quo during their online 9th Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations. The two countries’ joint statement expressed “serious concerns about recent negative developments and serious incidents in the South China Sea, including continuing militarization of disputed features, dangerous use of coast guard vessels and maritime militia, and efforts to disrupt other countries’ resource exploitation activities.” The joint statement calls on parties to act consistently with UNCLOS, without prejudice to the sovereignty and legitimate interests of any country and to cease actions that could escalate tensions.
