Brazil withdraws offer to host UN conference on climate change

Brazil on Wednesday withdrew its offer to host the COP25 United Nations climate conference next year, citing budget constraints and a presidential transition.

Environmental groups said the decision was no surprise after the election of right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro, who threatened to pull Brazil out of the Paris climate accord if elected.

Brazil's withdrawal came just days before the start of COP24, this year's climate conference in Katowice, Poland. COP25 is scheduled for November next year.
