China confirms commitment to US farm goods

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters Tuesday that Beijing would step up purchasing of US agricultural products.

He said that China's understanding of the latest trade talks was consistent with what the US described. He said Chinese firms have already purchased 700,000 tonnes of pork and 700,000 tonnes of sorghum from the US this year to meet market demand.

China's purchases of American farm goods have been one of US President Donald Trump's key demands to resolve the trade war between the two nations.

Trump said on Friday that China had agreed to purchase 40 billion to 50 billion USD worth of US agricultural goods in a first phase of an agreement to end the trade war.
