China, Japan, South Korea pledge joint effort on North Korea issue

Leaders from China, South Korea, and Japan on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula in a joint statement at the 7th trilateral summit in Tokyo.

On the day, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) asked the US to display good manners and sincerity as a dialogue partner. KCNA criticized the US for saying North Korea's commitment to denuclearization is the result of maximum pressure from Washington.

In a telephone conversation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he will soon announce the time for the US-North Korea summit. He said Secretary of State Pompeo met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un earlier.

On Wednesday, Trump said 3 US citizens arrested by Pyongyang are on their way back home with Mr. Pompeo. Defense Secretary James Mattis expressed more hope for the potential of the US-North Korea negotiations now that Pyongyang has released the captives.
