China has protested the US’s invitation of Chinese Taipei to the upcoming Summit for Democracy from December 9-10.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian condemned the move, saying the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China and Chinese Taipei is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. Zhao urged respect for the “One-China policy” and the Three Communiques signed by the US and China. He demanded that the US stop encouraging and supporting “Taiwan independence” forces.

Chinese Taipei is one of 110 invitees to the event, which will be held virtually.
