China, South Korea object to Japanese visits to Yasukuni Shrine

China and South Korea on Tuesday called on Japan to face up to its wartime past after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent an offering to the Yasukuni shrine and some Japanese MPs visited the shrine on the 72nd anniversary of Japan's World War II surrender.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry expressed its deep concern that Japan's government and parliament are again paying tribute at the Yasukuni Shrine that glorifies a war of aggression. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China resolutely opposes Japan's "wrong actions" with respect to the shrine and urged Japan to face up to and deeply reflect upon its history of militarism".
