Cuba’s first direct export to US in half a century

Cuba's exporter Cubaexport and US Company Coabana Trading LLC signed an agreement in Havana on Thursday to sell Cuban marabu charcoal to the US.

According to Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment, the first delivery of 40 tons of marabou charcoal is scheduled for January 18 and will be the first legal Cuban export to the US in five decades.

The Coabana Trading LLC will pay 420 USD a ton, higher than the market price of about 360 USD.

Isabel O'Reilly, Cubaexport's director, said she hopes that the first contract will pave the way for the export of other Cuban products to the US, such as honey and coffee.

Scott Gilbert, President of the Coabana Trading LLC, expressed his honor to sign the first deal with Cuba, saying that this was an important step forward in promoting cooperation between the two countries.
