Czech Republic rejects deploying US missile defense system

Czech Prime Minister, Bohuslav Sobotka on Sunday sharply criticized the idea of deploying a US missile defense system radar on Czech territory. He said the deployment of the radar in his country would mean the further escalation of tensions with Russia.

In 2011, the US announced plans to deploy missile defense systems in some Central and Eastern Europe countries, saying the move was to protect the US and Europe from potential terrorist threats but not to threaten Russia. Russia has said it would take appropriate military action if the US deploys the missile defense systems in the region.
