Deputy FM details APEC Economic Leaders’ Week outcomes

. Son said there are still major gaps between the viewpoints of certain members on trade protection and the multilateral trading system. This was one of the biggest reasons APEC leaders did not sign a joint statement this time.

Deputy Minister Son said on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with the Prime Ministers of Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Vanuatu, and leaders of other Asia-Pacific and APEC countries. PM Phuc had dialogues with members of the APEC Business Advisory Council and representatives of the US-APEC Business Alliance.

Mr. Son said delegates agreed to push ahead with implementing commitments made in 2017 in Vietnam and this year in Papua New Guinea. He said the leaders expressed support for Vietnam's bid to run for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure.
