Donald Tusk reelected European Council President

Donald Tusk was elected to a second term as President of the European Council on Thursday by an overwhelming vote at the EU Summit.

His home country Poland was the only country to oppose him. Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said prior to the Summit that he would do everything possible to block Tusk from attaining the post.

Tusk, a former Polish Prime Minister, was protested by Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party for interfering in Poland's internal political affairs. During his 30-month presidency, Tusk was praised by EU members for ushering the bloc through its hardest time. His first term will end on May 31.
