Efforts to defuse Gulf tensions

British Prime Minister Theresa May urged Saudi, Bahraini, and Qatari leaders on Thursday to de-escalate tensions over Qatar and restore unity within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Her spokesperson said Qatar needs to fight extremism and terrorism by working with its allies in the Gulf.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called on Saudi Arabian Sultan Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud to resolve the discord with Qatar before the end of Ramadan. According to Erdogan, Islamic countries should not sanction other Islamic countries, especially during Ramadan.

The Gulf crisis was high on the agenda of a meeting on Thursday in Algeria between Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and the UAE's Assistant Cabinet Minister Fares al-Mazrouei.
