EU, France, Russia congratulate Germany’s new chancellor

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Germany’s new chancellor Olaf Scholz on his appointment Wednesday, adding that she looks forward to working with him for a stronger EU. She tweeted in her native German that she hopes Scholz will have a good start and vowed to cooperate with him to keep Europe strong.

European Council Chief Charles Michel congratulated Scholz and said he hopes to receive Scholz when he attends the EU summit in Brussels next week.

The same day, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a welcoming tweet that he hopes their bilateral relations will be further consolidated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his keenness to foster constructive ties with Germany’s new leader.

At Wednesday noon, Social Democrat Olaf Scholz was sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor, succeeding Angela Merkel, who was in power for 16 years.

Scholz will propose a list of ministers to the German President. After being approved by the President, the cabinet ministers will be sworn in before the German Parliament the same day.
