EU limits sales of inflatable boats to Libya

The European Union has adopted limits on the export of inflatable boats to Libya to make it harder for smugglers to send refugees and migrants to Europe.

An EU statement on Monday said there will now be a legal basis to block the supply of dinghies and outboard motors to Libya if there are "reasonable grounds" to suspect they will be used by human traffickers. The legal trade of goods will not be affected by this measure, and the EU Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM) will continue until the end of next year. The mission's aim is to help the Libyan government control its coast, where refugees embark for Europe across the Mediterranean.
