EU unveils new defense cooperation

The European Union on Thursday launched the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) to promote Europe's military projects and enhance the bloc's defense capability.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has praised the mechanism, saying that it is helping the EU become the world's most reliable security assurance entity. Britain, Denmark, and Malta have refused to participate.

Later the same day, EU leaders denounced US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, saying that the city's status must be decided by negotiations.
