FAO praises VN’s poverty reduction achievements

VGP – Viet Nam is a typical success story in the development of agriculture, rural modernization, effective poverty reduction, and national food security, said officials from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva told Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat in Rome, that Viet Nam is a role model for developing countries to follow in the global threats of climate change and food insecurity.

Mr. Graziano da Silva thanked the Government of Viet Nam for facilitating the effective implementation of FAO projects in the country.

He urged Viet Nam to share its experience via the South-South cooperation framework. Silva said he will step up cooperation with Viet Nam to help it achieve the UN millennium development goals.

For his part, Minister Cao Duc Phat highlighted efforts from the Government and people of Viet Nam in the fields of agriculture, food security, poverty reduction.

He said Viet Nam strongly supports FAO initiatives and activities. The country has sent agricultural experts and technicians, and provided a wide variety of seeds for other developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Phat thanked the FAO for its assistance with more than 400 FAO-funded agricultural projects over past years and said he avidly looks forward to their continued backing.

Viet Nam hoped to continue to receive support from FAO for agricultural co-operation projects, with a focus on food security, nutritional improvement, climate change resilience, environmental protection, and responses to epidemics and diseases, he added.
