Folk music festival entices Hanoi audiences

A festival of Vietnamese folk music opened at Dong Xuan night market in Hanoi on Sunday, attracting folk singers from clubs in Hanoi, Hoa Binh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Giang, and Ho Chi Minh city.

Thao Giang, Director of the Vietnam Folk Music Development Center, which is hosting the festival, said: This year's festival includes folk artists from all over Vietnam, not just from Hanoi. There are performances every weekend in August of ch?u van (a ritual music combining trance singing and dancing), x?m (ancient folk singing performed by blind beggars), ca trA (chamber music), and southern folk songs.

The month-long festival celebrates Vietnam's National Day (September 2) and Vietnam Music Day (September 3).
