France to close Fessenheim nuclear plant

France on Tuesday took a key step towards shutting down its oldest nuclear power station, a campaign promise of Socialist President Francois Hollande before he leaves office in May.

The board of state-owned electricity utility EDF approved a compensation package worth 400 million euros for the shutdown of the plant in Fessenheim, on the border with Germany. President Hollande vowed during his 2012 election campaign to close the facility, part of a promise to reduce the share of nuclear energy in France's energy mix and increase the share of renewable energy.
