French government resigns in post-election formality

French President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday that his government had tendered its resignation, a traditional formality after the results of a presidential election are validated by the Constitutional Court.

In a letter to Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, Hollande asked him to handle government functions until a new government is formed.

Emmanuel Macron, who won the presidential election, will be sworn in on Sunday. He has not yet set a date for naming positions in his new government.
