French president elect Emmanuel Macron delivers victory speech

French president elect Emmanuel Macron celebrated his victory on Sunday night outside the Louvre museum, in Paris, before tens of thousands of supporters.

He thanked those who voted for him, underscored France's unity, and pledged to protect the Republic and live up to the people's expectations. He pointed out heavy tasks that he said should be done as from today. They include forming a truly strong majority in the parliament, protect the vitality of democracy, and revive the economy to enable everybody to gain a foothold in society. Macron stressed the need to reform Europe and vowed to do his utmost to fight division that weakens France and serve France with all his devotion, resolute, and modesty towards "freedom, equality, and humanity.
