Gov’t chief greets U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a reception for U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Thomas Price in Ha Noi on August 24.

PM Phuc hailed the U.S. guest to Viet Nam for the APEC High-level Meeting on Health and the Economy and his working meeting with Vietnamese healthcare agencies.

PM Phuc expressed his delight to witness new developments in the bilateral ties, especially the close coordination in healthcare between the two countries over the past 20 years.

The host leader also showed his satisfaction with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the two health ministries during the US official's ongoing visit.

The Vietnamese Government, said PM Phuc, treasured the US Government's cooperation and support for Viet Nam's health sector through programs, including the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Health Security Agenda with the opening of offices on epidemics alert and response launched by the General Department of Preventive Medicine and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Viet Nam.

He was convinced that bilateral medical ties will further thrive, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS, influenza prevention, global health security and potential cooperation areas such as the training of medical staff, the granting of national vocational certificates, global health diplomacy, food safety and pharmaceuticals.

In reply, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services conveyed greetings of President Donald Trump and the President's high evaluation of the developments in the bilateral ties in various aspects including healthcare.

The U.S. appreciated Viet Nam's achievements in ensuring global health as well as in preventing and controlling epidemics diseases and HIV/AIDS and wished to further enhance ties with Viet Nam in the field, said the guest.

The Secretary described the signing of the MoU with the Vietnamese Health Ministry as the start of long-term bilateral cooperation. Secretary Price treasured Viet Nam's effort in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He was convinced that healthcare cooperation would open up other fields of cooperation./.
