Ho Chi Minh City has pushed back on rumors that the entire city will be locked down to control the COVID-19 epidemic.

Rumors circulating on social media say the city administration will impose a lockdown of 10 to 15 days beginning either Wednesday or Thursday. The false stories even give detailed information on what local residents must do or not do during the lockdown period.

The HCM City Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control on Sunday refuted the rumors, saying the false information spreading on social media is interfering with the city’s real efforts to contain COVID-19.

The Committee advised people to stay calm, get their information from reliable sources, and remain vigilant against fake news that might cause people to panic.

According to the Committee, the city is taking steps to halt the spread of the virus and get this new outbreak under control.

HCM City has become the largest coronavirus hotspot in Vietnam, recording more than 6,000 new cases since the resurgence of the virus in late April.
