The Ministry of Health has warned that the public should be vigilant against fake news related to novel coronavirus outbreak(Covid-19).

sMost recently, an announcement assumed to be made by a professor named Bach of the National Steering Committee on Covid-19 response, has circulated on the Internet about the critical window for Vietnam to contain the novel coronavirus as well as further outbreaks in the country.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that it is fake news. Nguyen Dinh Anh, Director General of the Ministry’s Communicatrion and Reward Department, said that none of the members of the National Steering Committee on Covid-19 response are named Bach.

According to the ill-intentioned announcement, it will take 4-6 days for the number of infections to jump from 30 to 500 and another 8-12 days to soar to 5,000 in Vietnam. It also advises the public to restrict travel for a week to restrain new cases.

Law experts said spreading fake news commits a crime and carries a maximum fine of 2,200 USD. Individuals or organizations who intentionally create fake news may be brought into criminal prosecution. Given recent complications of Covid-19, users of social networks are required to show responsibility by following mainstream information.
