Hundreds of thousands of EU nationals want to stay in UK after Brexit

More than 750,000 European Union citizens have applied to remain living in Britain after it leaves the EU, Interior Minister Sajid Javid said on Thursday.

Polish nationals comprise the biggest group, followed by Romanians and Italians. Under the EU Settlement Scheme, EU citizens who have lived continuously in Britain for five years can be granted settled status, giving them the same rights to work, study and access benefits and services as they currently do. The controversial EU Settlement Scheme applies to approximately 3.8 million EU citizens. In January, Prime Minister Theresa May waived a 65 pound fee for EU nationals who want to stay in the UK.
