International Day of Forests: FAO calls on Central American countries to protect the “green lung”

The Food and Agriculture Organization for United Nations (FAO) on Tuesday called on Central American countries to enhance forestry protection in response to the International Day of Forests, March 21st.

According to FAO, 22.5 million out of 45 million people living in this region have to use charcoal for cooking and other needs because of the lack of alternative energy resources. The use of charcoal slows down the forest restoration process, and harms the environment and human health. FAO's Coordinator for Central America said countries should invest in the technology and management for sustainable forestry and restoration in order to complete UN Sustainable Development Goals and promote green economies.
