Iran begins annual military drill

Iran's navy began an annual drill Sunday near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where several tense confrontations have occured between Iranian forces and the US Navy.

Iran's navy chief Habibollah Sayyari said the two-day operation covers the waters in the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean near the strait. Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard is not part of the drill. The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, declined to comment on Iran's military exercise.

This is the first major exercise Iran has conducted since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.
