Iran receives US response on nuclear proposal

Iran has received a response from the US to its proposals for a final draft of the agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, its foreign ministry said.

According to foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani, the process of carefully reviewing the US response has begun and Iran will announce its decision after it completes its review.

After the EU sent Iran the final text of a draft agreement to restore the JCPOA, Iran proposed some adjustments. The draft agreement and Iran’s proposed adjustments were sent to the US, Russia, China, the UK, Germany, and France – the signatories of the JCPOA with Iran.

Under the JCPOA, signed between Iran, the five permanent UN Security Council members (the US, the UK, France, China, and Russia), and Germany in July 2015, Tehran agreed to restrict its nuclear activities in exchange for an easing of international sanctions. But the US’s withdrawal from the landmark deal and its re-imposition of sanctions prompted Iran to stop complying with the deal.

After 16 months of indirect negotiations between the US and Iran via EU officials, the EU released the final draft of a new agreement on August 8.
