IS claims responsibility for Paris knife attack

An assailant shouting Allahu akbar (God is greatest) killed a passer-by in a knife attack and wounded 4 others in Paris on Saturday before he was shot dead by police, French authorities reported.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

The assailant was born in 1997 in the Chechnya region of Russia, a judicial source said on Sunday. The parents of the attacker are being held for questioning by police, the source added.

The attack took place in the heart of the French capital, in a district popular with tourists for its many restaurants and cafes, landmark retail stores, and the Paris opera.
