Israeli PM pledges support for two-state solution with Palestine

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid pledged support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his Thursday address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The establishment of a Palestinian state, alongside Israel, is the right solution to the long, bloody conflict, Lapid said, marking the first time in years that an Israeli leader publicly expressed support for a two-state solution.

He said an agreement with the Palestinians, based on two states for two peoples, is the right path for Israel’s security, for Israel’s economy, and for the future of Israel’s children.

According to Lapid, Israel only has one condition that a future Palestinian state be a peaceful one, adding that Israel will have the ability to protect itself.

Earlier in his speech on Wednesday at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, US President Joe Biden reiterated Washington’s commitments to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
