Israeli president on first-ever visit to UAE

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog started his first visit to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, the latest high-profile diplomatic trip since the countries normalised ties, and his first trip abroad since taking office in July 2021.

President Herzog is expected to meet with UAE leaders during his trip at the invitation of Foreign Minister and Prince Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. He hailed efforts of Prince Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed to establish a peace agreement with Israel, sending a message that peace is the only solution to ensure interests for people in the region.

The visit comes some 16 months after the UAE forged diplomatic ties with Israel, becoming the third Arab nation to do so after Egypt and Jordan. Three other Arab countries – Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco – also forged diplomatic ties with Israel.
