Japan open to deployment of missile defense system

Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada will visit the western Pacific island of Guam on Thursday and Friday to inspect the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system at the US Andersen Air Force Base.

Minister Inada told a press conference on Tuesday that Japan was trying to find ways to strengthen its ballistic missile defense system in the face of new nuclear threats from North Korea.

The THAAD is a US army anti-ballistic missile system designed to intercept short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles at the final incoming stage.
