Japan to help reduce tension between US, Iran

Japan wants to make every effort to reduce tension between the United States and Iran before responding to an anticipated US request to send its navy to safeguard strategic waters off the coast of Iran.

The statement was made by Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo at a press conference on Monday, just a day following the victory of his Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition in the upper house election.

Also on Monday, Iran's Intelligence Ministry reported that it arrested 17 suspects charged with spying for the CIA and sentenced some of them to death. The US has yet to respond to the claims.
