Japan, US boost alliance to cope with North Korean threats

Japan and the US have committed to maintain pressure on North Korea and strengthen bilateral alliance to better respond to increasing threats from Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

The two countries' foreign and defense chiefs, at a 2+2 high-level security discussion at Washington on Thursday, called on the international community to comprehensively and thoroughly implement UN Security Council sanctions on North Korea in order to force it to change course.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya told reporters the same day that softer rhetoric from the US and North Korea shows that tensions are being eased. He also called on both countries to avoid provocations and pursue a political roadmap to solve the North Korean issue.
