538 electors voted in the US Electoral College Monday, formalizing President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
California’s 55 electors pushed Joe Biden over the 270-vote threshold needed to become the 46th President of the US. With this victory, Biden has received 302 electoral votes.
According to the US Constitution, electoral votes determine who becomes the President, not the millions of citizens who cast their ballots a month ago. The electoral results will now be sent to Congress, where Vice President Mike Pence will chair a joint session on January 6, 2021, to formally announce the next President. Biden will be sworn in to office on January 20.
