Jordan says it won’t invite Syria to Arab League summit

Jordan said on Wednesday that it will not invite Syria to the Arab League summit next month, five years after the league suspended Syria for its civil war. Jordan will host the event near the Dead Sea on March 29. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said invitations depend on the decision of the Arab League and Jordan will abide by it.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for Syria to be allowed to rejoin the league, saying it could help in the search for a negotiated settlement. But Arab League Chief Ahmad Abu Al Geit ruled out an early return of Syria to the league. Some of the League's most influential members, including Saudi Arabia, are fierce critics of the Damascus regime.
