Lawmakers discuss COVID-19 fight, support for affected people

Lawmakers spent the whole Sunday debating socio-economic development including the battle against COVID-19.

Legislators acknowledged encouraging socio-economic development in the first half of this year but underlined the side effects of the pandemic on the national economy.

Deputy Nguyen Thi Thuy of Bac Kan province spoke highly of the Government’s prompt directions for coronavirus-hit localities to combat the pandemic while maintaining economic activities.

Highlighting the adverse impact of COVID-19 on workers and businesses, Thuy suggested the Government deploy inter-sectoral statistical software to quickly identify beneficiaries of support policies.

Deputy Vu Thi Luu Mai of Hanoi said she agreed with the COVID-19 response proposals submitted by the Government to the legislative body.

“The proposals are feasible and necessary amid unpredictable epidemic developments, but epidemic prevenvetion and control measures must be  strictly enforced. It’s essential to speed up the disbursement of the 1.13 million USD support package to help affected people and businesses and ensure that the support is timely and transparent.”

Echoing the Government’s goals and solutions for the last 6 months of the year, Nguyen Minh Tam, a representative of Quang Binh province, underscored the need to adopt long-term solutions and a strategy to live with the epidemic towards a new normal.

Minister of Labors, Invalids, and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said that after two weeks of implementation, the 1.13 billion USD support package has proved this is a timely and correct policy.

11 million workers will benefit from occupational accident insurance worth 187 million USD, he said, adding that food expenses have been provided to those involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients and quarantine work.

“More than 52,000 employees whose labor contracts have been suspended or who have undergone unpaid leave at nearly 6,000 enterprises have benefited from the support policy,” said Minister Dung.

Deputy Tran Hoang Ngan of Ho Chi Minh City praised the National Assembly’s decision to shorten the ongoing session to focus on the pandemic fight.

He said the inclusion of COVID-19 prevention and control issues in the session’s resolution is extremely important.

He affirmed that despite numerous difficulties, Ho Chi Minh City has been making every effort to soon contain the epidemic to bring life back to normal.
