Montenegro becomes NATO’s 29th member

Montenegro officially joined NATO Monday amid worries about US President Donald Trump's ambiguous commitment to the alliance's collective defense pledge.

Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic stressed that this is a historic event for his country. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Montenegro's accession is good for regional stability, and world peace and security. The move came in the face of bitter opposition from Moscow, who says NATO's steady expansion into Eastern Europe threatens Russia's own security.
