A Mekong River cruise combined with biking from HCMC to Cambodia’s ancient kingdom of Angkor is National Geographic’s top must-try adventurous experience.
Travel writers at the US magazine selected their 17 favorite adventure trips, with a tour along Mekong River in Vietnam to Cambodia topping the list.
The Mekong is the longest river in Southeast Asia and runs through many of its countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia.
The tour of nine days and eight nights, which costs 4,990 USD per person, starts in Ho Chi Minh City, bordering the mighty Mekong Delta region close to the mouth of the river, where visitors board a cruise ship and start the voyage along the Mekong River.
Joining the tour, visitors will have an opportunity to pedal through colonial towns, dragon fruit farms and rice paddies strewn across Mekong Delta provinces.
“Pedal for a few hours each day, then rejoin the company’s live-aboard boat as it meanders north from Vietnam into Cambodia,” NatGeo wrote.
The journey at the Vietnamese end of the Mekong ends near the busy town of Cao Lanh in Dong Thap Province where travelers reboard the boat on their cruise into Cambodia. Here, visitors can cycle around Phnom Penh’s Silk Island, well-known as the home of loom silk weaving and raised houses.
In Siem Reap, the final stop of the tour, visitors can spend a day cycling around the mighty temples of Angkor, NatGeo suggested.
Other adventurous trips recommended include spotting rare giraffes in Zambia, conquering fiery volcanoes in Guatemala, going bush camping in Queensland and joining the Wacky Races along Central Asia’s Silk Road.
