Nation cheers football squad’s 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup victory

Elation exploded across Vietnam as the national football teamwon the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup 2018, ending a 10-year wait.

Vietnam defeated Malaysia 1-0 in the second leg of the final in Hanoi on Saturday night, securing a 3-2 aggregate win after a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Malaysia. Traffic in major cities like Hanoi, HCM city, and Da Nang in Saigon was frozen as millions of fans flocked to the streets to celebrate the victory. A carnival bloomed on Vietnamese streets as bedecked cars, costumed fans and mega drums went on spontaneous parades. People screamed out the head coach and players' names in joy.

The whole country is enjoying the win. The weather also supports the fans. People are united. It is just amazing, said Nguyen Van Tuyen of Hanoi.

Millions of Vietnamese had waited for this moment for 10 years. The team did an excellent job and we would never forget them, Doan Vien Phuong of HCM city told VOV.

In an article titled Vietnam win AFF Suzuki Cup thanks to Anh Duc volley, Reuters wrote Anh Duc's fine first-half strike ensured Park Hang-seo's side overcame a robust Malaysia team to send the majority of the sold-out crowd at the My Dinh Stadium into raptures.

Malaysia's New Straits Times wrote that the golden dragons beat Malaysia for AFF Cup title.

AP, AFP and Fox Sports also highlighted Vietnam's victory.
