National Chau Van singing festival opens in Ha Nam province

The 2019 Chau Van, or trance singing, festival opened at Lanh Giang Temple in Ha Nam province on Thursday as part of Vietnam's efforts to preserve and promote intangible cultural values.

The 3-day festival honors individuals and communities who have contributed to the preservation, practice, teaching, and promotion of Chau Van.

Chau Van singing is part of Mother Goddess worship, one of Vietnam's traditional worshipping practices. It began during the Tran Dynasty in the 13th century in the northern province of Nam Dinh.
