New-style rural area building meets targets two years ahead of schedule

Agriculture and rural development have always been a top priority in Vietnam, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc told a conference to review 10 years of the national target program on building new-style rural areas in the northern province of Nam Dinh on Saturday.

Mr. Phuc urged localities to focus on preserving local cultures and settling pending social issues in rural areas. By October this year, all communes in 8 provinces and cities across Vietnam had met the criteria of new-style rural areas, two years ahead of schedule.

At an event honoring role models in the new-style rural area building movement from 2010 to 2020 on Friday, Prime Minister Phuc launched the next phase of the campaign under which 75% of communes are expected to be recognized as new-style rural areas by 2025.

The national target program has blown fresh wind into Vietnam's rural areas. Infrastructure and the living standards of people in the countryside have improve significantly thanks to the joint efforts of the entire political system and people, he said.
