The National Assembly Standing Committee on Saturday nominated Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc as Vietnam’s State President for the 2021-2026 tenure.

Poliburo member Phuc, 67, is State President for the 2016-2021 tenure. He took office in April this year.

NA deputies will elect the President by secret ballot next Monday. The new President will take the oath of office as soon as the results are announced.

The same day, legislators agreed to wrap up their ongoing session in Hanoi next Wednesday, 3 days ahead of schedule, due to the unpredictable developments of COVID-19.

Hanoi has imposed citywide social distance to curb the spread of coronavirus.
