North American countries agree to modernize trade regulations

Negotiators from the US, Canada, and Mexico on Wednesday kicked off the 5-day first round of renegotiating the decades-old North American Free Trade Agreement.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said all three parties want to modernize NAFTA by adding provisions to protect digital trade, service trade, and electronic trade, updating customs procedures and intellectual property protection, adjusting energy regulations, and boosting science-based agricultural trade.

There will be 7 rounds of negotiation between now and early 2018.
