North Korea asks US, South Korea to stop joint exercise

North Korea on Friday expressed concerns over the extension of Vigilant Storm, a joint aerial exercise of South Korea and the US, and warned of counter measures against any violation of its national sovereignty and security.

According to KCNA, a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry says the US and South Korea organized the largest ever joint aerial exercise and they need to end it.

The situation on the Korean peninsula has become tense since the US and South Korea conducted the Vigilant Storm drill that mobilized 240 aircrafts including fighters, tankers, cargo planes, and ISR planes.

Fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighters from the US Marine Corps and the South Korean military, as well as US Navy and Army assets, are involved. Australian aircraft are also taking part.

The US military has also deployed Los Angeles-class submarine USS Key West to Busan.
