– Localities from the central coastal province of Ha Tinh province northward have to prepare scenarios to protect people’s safety against Lionrock storm and COVID-19, said a senior offical in charge of disaster prevention. 

At an emergency meeting in Hanoi on Saturday, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan, who is Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, urged localities to minimize damage caused by ongoing Lionrock storm which is forcast to weaken into a low pressure before entering the mainland.

Together with a cold front which is moving from north to south, Lionrock has caused strong winds and heavy rain in large parts of northern and north-central regions, with average rainfall of 100 – 250mm.

The national weather forecasting bureau warned of a high risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and flooding in low-lying and riverside areas.

The next 10 days is forecast to see dangerous natural disasters, including Kompasu storm to enter the East Sea on October 13 and 14. A low pressure is forecast to strengthen into a storm and directly affect Vietnam.

Minister Hoan asked localities to get prepared for any circumstance to ensure safety for dyke and reservoir systems to minimize losses. Military forces were ordered to work with localities to set up mobile stations to receive people traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to their homes in northern provinces. People should be early informed of natural disasters to actively protect their lives and property, he said.
